A review in the National Catholic Register

Bringing Lent Home With St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Prayers, Reflections and Activities for Families
By Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle
Ave Maria Press, 2013
96 pages, $2.95
To order: avemariapress.com

During Lent, Catholic parents have the valuable opportunity to catechize their children about the true meaning of this beautiful liturgical season and offer their children — and themselves — opportunities to grow in holiness.
In Bringing Lent Home With St. Thérèse of Lisieux: Prayers, Reflections and Activities for Families, popular author and EWTN host Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle leads families on a retreat, using St. Thérèse of Lisieux as a spiritual guide to anchor domestic churches in prayer, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season.
The wisdom of St. Thérèse guides families through each day of Lent — all the way through to Easter Sunday. Each day’s devotional reading offers a quote from the Little Flower and a brief excerpt from her life, as well as fasting and almsgiving suggestions, points to ponder and a simple yet poignant prayer.
The parent reflections in the book are particularly moving. Here is one example:
"The Blessed Mother has much to teach us. She remained with her Son, Jesus, to the bitter end and witnessed every drop of blood he shed on our behalf. While in his agony on the cross, Jesus gave his Mother Mary to all of us to be our Mother.
While Mary won’t always perform miracles for us as she did with St. Thérèse the day she was cured of her illness, Mary will work miracles in our hearts and will indeed bring us closer to her Son. We need to ask her to guide us."
Calling to mind important Catholic truth and saintly wisdom, this booklet offers both spiritual depth and practicality of format. The saint’s spirituality is shared in an easy-to-understand manner, even for children. The short devotions are perfect for busy families’ schedules, and the suggested activities for fasting and almsgiving are creative and doable.
As a doctor of the Church whose spiritual doctrine consists of the "Little Way," St. Thérèse is an excellent spiritual guide and model of holiness for both children and adults, especially for Lent.
This booklet is a beautiful spiritual companion for your family this Lent — and Lenten seasons to come.

Imitating Mary: Ten Marian Virtues for the Modern Mom

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with author and speaker Marge Fenelon about her newest book, Imitating Mary: Ten Marian Virtues for the Modern Mom.

I endorsed her beautiful book and this is what I had to say:

“Lovely and relevant–Imitating Mary is food for the mother’s soul! Marge Fenelon unpacks Mary’s virtuous role in Scripture and Church tradition and brilliantly puts it in language that modern-day mothers can identify with and readily apply to their lives. Simply beautiful!”

Marge, would you share with us the inspiration behind writing this book?

I've been very close to the Blessed Virgin Mary since childhood. I was raised in the spirituality of the Apostolic Movement of Schoenstatt, a Catholic lay movement of renewal with a marked Marian charism. From the movement's founder, Fr. Joseph Kentenich, I assimilated an understanding of Mary as a real Mother with an active interest in even the tiniest details about me and my life. When I studied for my Certificate in Marian Studies from the International Marian Research Institute at the University of Dayton, I learned a fascinating method of studying Mary that instilled in me an insatiable hunger to find out everything possible about her. Mary's been a special help to me as an example for my own motherhood, since I didn't have quite that experience from my birth mother growing up. She's always been there for me, and I'd like others to know that she's always there for them, too.

What are your hopes for this book?

What I hope - what I pray for - is that Imitating Mary becomes a valuable tool and inspiration for women who either haven't had a positive mothering experience, underestimate the fine job they're
already doing as mothers, are uncertain of their ability to be wonderful moms, are simply feeling defeated and washed out, and those who want to develop a genuine relationship with Mary as Mother. I hope even guys - particularly those married to, or working with, women in a counseling/pastoring relationship - will read this book in order to help them understand more about Mary and her Motherhood. The gentlemen who have reviewed the manuscript have benefitted from it.

Why is important for a Catholic to develop a relationship with the
Blessed Mother?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that Mary is our mother "in the order of grace," meaning that, when she said "yes" to becoming our Lord's mother, she also said "yes" to becoming our mother. At the moment Mary conceived Jesus in her womb, she gave birth to us spiritually, and she's never reneged on that responsibility, nor will she ever.

Additionally, Mary plays an essential role in God's plan of salvation. Her consent allowed the Son of God to become incarnate and subsequently redeem us. That was just the first step. She has and
always will remain by Christ's side as Helpmate, Mediatrix, Benefactress, and Co-Redemptrix. In her perfect discipleship and privileged position among mankind, she is the model for the Church, which includes all of us. That's why people often refer to the Catholic Church as Holy Mother Church.

To put it simply: We need her because she is our Mother and will go to any length to help secure our salvation, if only we open our hearts and allow her to enter in.

When did you begin praying to Mary?

All growing up, there was a picture of the Blessed Mother hanging in our living room, which is now the one we have hanging in the Fenelon Clan prayer corner. That planted the seed of interest in Mary at a fairly young age. I'm the product of a Catholic grade school, so the formal prayers to Mary began in first grade and continued from there. Each phase of my life - high school, college, wife, mother, and author - gave my prayers a new dimension.

Where can we get your book?

You can get personally inscribed copies from my website at www.margefenelon.com. Or, you can check out your local Catholic bookstore. You also can order online at Ave Maria Press, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon.

Thanks so much, Marge. I pray that your book will inspire countless hearts to come closer to Mary and because they do, come closer to Jesus too.

God bless!

"My Confirmation Book"

My book for Confirmands and their family has just released:
 "My Confirmation Book."

Book description:  Part keepsake, part teaching book, this small volume is filled with inspiration, encouragement, and reflections to ponder for 4th graders and up. Through simple text, it explains the privileges and responsibilities imparted through the sacrament of Confirmation. Compelling stories about saints and children their own age will help kids become more familiar with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and learn how the gifts can be active in their own lives. The apostolic mission of a confirmed Catholic is emphasized and readers are reminded that the sacrament of Confirmation is exciting—the same Holy Spirit who appeared to the apostles and the Blessed Mother at Pentecost is the one who will come to them when they are confirmed.

Wonderful endorsements:
"Too often we whisk our youth through the sacrament without a clear understanding of what's happening. That's tragic, because a grace misunderstood is easily unappreciated, and a grace unappreciated is easily lost. My Confirmation Book empowers young people to receive the Holy Spirit in a way that's active, personal, willing, and enduring. Highly recommended."~Mike Aquilina, co-host of The Lamb's Supper on EWTN, and Executive Vice-President of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

My Confirmation Book is the perfect gift for any Confirmand. Full of inspiration and wisdom, each chapter poses a thought-provoking scenario to help bring the various gifts of the Holy Spirit to life. Donna-Marie’s book will be my present of choice for the special teens in my life preparing to receive this beautiful sacrament.” ~Lisa M. Hendey, Founder of CatholicMom.com and author of A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms
“A wonderful tool for parents, religious education leaders, and all who are concerned about raising up strong young Catholics – Catholics who will be able to boldly and joyfully proclaim their faith and engage a culture so in need of God.” ~Teresa Tomeo, Catholic syndicated talk show host, Ave Maria Radio

Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle is an award-winning author and the EWTN television host of “Everyday Blessings for Catholic Moms.” A Catholic wife and mother of five, she was noted as one of the Top Ten Most Fascinating Catholics in 2009 by Faith & Family Live and enjoyed a decade-long friendship with Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

My book is available from my website. It will be autographed and sent along with a blessed Miraculous Medal: www.donnacooperoboyle.com

Interview with Mary DeTurris Poust

"Often, it is not the fear of failure that holds us back but the fear of success. We cling to the comfortable rather than step out into the possible. So we sit at home with a container of Cookies and Cream rather than take a chance on getting our heart broken again, or we down an entire bag of chocolate- covered pretzels rather than work on that resume that might get us out of a dead-end job. Or we eat cold pasta right from the refrigerator rather than sit down in silence and listen for the whisper of the Spirit speaking to our hearts.”~Mary DeTurris Poust

It is my honor and privilege to interview Mary DeTurris Poust about her newest book, Cravings: A Catholic Wrestles with Food, Self-Image, and God. This post will kick off Mary's blog tour which starts today right here! You'll also have the opportunity to enter to win a copy of the author's book, Cravings, as well as a $100.00 William Sonoma gift card! Details will follow this interview.

Before I begin our interview I'd like to tell you a bit about Mary DeTurris Poust.

Mary DeTurris Poust is an author, columnist, journalist, speaker, and blogger who has written for dozens of Catholic and secular publications. She is the author of Walking Together, Everyday Divine, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Catholic Catechism, and Parenting a Grieving Child. Poust was a senior correspondent and contributing editor for Our Sunday Visitor newspaper for fourteen years.

Her award-winning monthly column “Life Lines” has been published in Catholic New York since 2001. Poust also writes about family, faith, and the spiritual journey at her own blog, Not Strictly Spiritual. She has worked for the dioceses of Metuchen, New Jersey, and Austin, Texas, as well as the Archdiocese of New York, where she served as managing editor of Catholic New York. She lives in upstate New York with her husband and three children.

Mary, your new book, Cravings is very unique. The cover is stunning - I love it! Would you kindly tell us what prompted you to write this book?

This book was really a blessing and a journey for me. My publisher, Ave Maria Press, first approached me with the idea of writing something on the connection between food and faith. Over the course of a month or two, I prayed on it and discovered bit by bit that not only did I want to write this book but that I needed to write this book – for myself and for every other person out there who has ever let food or weight or any other outside issue become a barometer of their self worth.

Was it difficult to write this book? Would you like to share any part of the writing process with us?

Like you, I’m very comfortable sharing personal stories and allowing myself to be vulnerable in front of my readers, but this book took that to a whole new level for me. I wanted to be totally honest about my own issues with self-esteem and diet and weight. At the same time, I wanted to make sure I didn’t make my own situation seem more dire than it was. I’ve never had a true eating disorder, and I did not want to lessen the seriousness of what that means for people who do have that challenge in their lives. On top of all that, I wanted this book to be a celebration of food and faith, not a diet book, so I had to find a way to achieve that balance. I tried to follow my own advice throughout the writing of this book, which was one way this project became a gift and a blessing. It allowed me to enter more deeply into my own life story.

What are some of the ways you challenge the reader in Cravings?

A big part of getting beyond our cravings and negative habits depends on us finding new ways to approach food, not by counting calories or pounds but by becoming more aware of what’s sitting on our plate, what’s going on around us, and what’s running through our mind. When we try one fad diet after another, we’re not really getting to the underlying cause of our food issues, which is why diets so often fail. I try to give readers practical ways to break out of their food ruts – from mindful practices that can transform a meal into mediation to simple suggestions for healthier grocery shopping to creating everyday food rituals. I also share lots of stories – my own and those of people who have had various diet and weight issues. And I bring in advice from experts in all sorts of food and faith-related areas, a Benedictine monk, a Catholic “foodie,” nutritionists, chefs and more. I think I challenge readers to think about food and about themselves in a whole new way, a healthier way.

What do you think is the greatest struggle when it comes to food and body image?

Too many of us have bought into the notion – pushed on us by advertisers and magazines and Hollywood -- that beauty and self-worth come with a specific dress size or weight and that the way to happiness can be found in a pill, a crash diet, or a piece of exercise equipment. That view can turn food into the enemy, the thing that keeps us from true success, happiness, and acceptance. In giving food so much significance, we give it power, and so begins the damaging connection between food and self-image. My hope is that through my book, I can help people sever that connection and put food in its rightful place. Food is not the enemy and we are not a number on a scale. We are “wonderfully made” as we read in Psalm 139, no matter what our waist size. Once we realize that, food loses its hold on us.

Would you share a bit about how you have woven prayer into a book, which seems to be about food? After all, it is titled, Cravings and an attractive succulent berry adorns the front cover.

As with so many things that can get in the way of true joy and freedom, not only food, but whatever “vice” we may turn to for comfort, reward, celebration – shopping, drinking, gambling, social media – prayer is critical when we want to turn things around and find spiritual, emotional, and physical well being. We can’t do it alone; we need God, and so prayer must be part of the equation. That’s why I give readers a meditation at the end of every chapter. When we weave prayer into everyday life, especially into our meal times, we begin to move away from the mindless, eat-for-any-reason mentality to a place of balance, wholeness, and holiness. So often when we reach for food without really thinking about what we’re doing, it’s because we’re hungry for something much deeper -- for love, for acceptance, for peace, for God. But without prayer we don’t know how to find it and so we resort to something easy, something like food. And so Cravings is really about so much more than diet and self-image. It’s about the spiritual journey.

Do you have any special book signing events coming up?

I will be appearing on CNN’s “Weekend Early Start” program tomorrow morning (Sunday, Jan. 6) at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, so I hope readers will tune in for that. And, of course, this stop is the first of a 15-day blog tour. I will also be doing a free webinar, “What Are You Craving in 2013? Five Ways to Restore Sanity and Serenity to Your Relationship with Food," for Ave Maria Press on Tuesday, February 5, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. I’m beginning to set up some speaking engagements and retreats for the coming year, so readers can check my blog for information on those as they come up: www.notstrictlyspiritual.com

Finally, Mary, where can we get your book?

You can find it in all of the usual places: Amazon, Barnes&Noble, and at Ave Maria Press.

Thank you very much for the interview, Mary.

By the way, everyone, Ave Maria Press, the publisher says, "Cravings is a powerful companion in learning to look at body and spirit as two united parts of a whole and in doing so, gaining self-awareness and self-acceptance. As Poust helps readers confront the fact that God truly does love us unconditionally, the need for external gratification diminishes, as does the urge to count calories. With the help of reflection questions at the end of each chapter, Cravings becomes an intensely personal experience that gives the reader a chance to stop and meditate on his or her self-image."

You can see Mary's upcoming schedule here: http://www.notstrictlyspiritual.com/2013/01/foodie-friday-cravings-blog-tour-kicks-off-tomorrow/

Don't forget to enter to win a copy of Mary's book, Cravings by leaving a comment on this blog by Saturday, January 12th. I will put all of the comments into a hat and randomly choose a winner on January 13, 2013 (feast of the Baptism of the Lord).

Yours is the Church

Just got my copy! Yours is the Church by Mike Aquilina is a work of art!

Here's what I had to say about it: "Leave it to Mike Aquilina to skillfully dust off 2,000 years of Church history and make it come alive! Through intriguing topics, the author accurately illustrates how the Church has shaped humanity. This is THE book to learn about the Catholic Church--and in the most fascinating way."

I hope you can get your own copy.

A Mother's Study Guide

By the way, my daughter illustrated the cover!
Pope John Paul II wrote that the little domestic church, like the greater Church, needs to be constantly and intensely evangelized: hence its duty regarding permanent education in the faith. The home is a center of living faith, a domestic church, and motherhood is a vocation. This book offers a systematic course for mothers that is equally useful for groups and individuals. The leader's guide contains helpful suggestions for women on how to begin a study group in their parish or neighborhood, a format for weekly sessions, how to create a comfortable, inspiring atmosphere, and tips for leading each lesson.
"Though an individual would benefit from reading, this book is arranged as a study guide for a group, with discussion questions at the end of each section. (And, pssst ... don't worry, busy moms -- the answers are there, too! So don't worry about passing class.)
The Domestic Church, like all of Donna-Marie's books, backs up its exhortation with solid sources such as quotes from Scripture, encyclicals and saints. I love Donna-Marie's realism, too. In this book, she includes a beautiful quote from Blessed Teresa of Calcutta:
"A living love hurts. Jesus, to prove His love for us, died on the Cross. The mother, to give birth to her child, has to suffer. If you really love one another properly, there must be sacrifice."

And she honestly addresses temptations to abandon the heart of the home," noting that mothers can get discouraged, or feel unrecognized and unappreciated. She writes: "A mother who is fighting this interior battle may feel, or even state that she is 'just' a mother. I have heard this so often, and I will tell the mom that she is 'not just a mother!
This is the heart of Donna's message, and this is her mission: to help other moms realize that their work is a vital, vibrant, holy vocation.

I highly recommend Donna-Marie's books to newly married women and new mothers, and to moms of any age who seek encouragement and affirmation in their vocation.
And so, dear moms, if you have any doubts about the worth of your daily struggles, sacrifices and joys, dig into these books. When you've finished, you'll close them with a contented sigh, knowing that someone out there understands your worth and knows what you're going through...that you are storing up treasures in heaven."~Author and blogger, Karen Edmisten

New Review of Mother Teresa and Me: Ten Years of Friendship!

"This book was a fabulous read during this Lenten season. This book is an easy read, yet so deep. It is a personal, up-close relationship with a Saint, Blessed Mother Teresa. Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle has a gift from God that allowed her to share Christ by sharing Mother Teresa with us-the reader. I found the longing of my heart's search for Christ's passion for our souls in reading about Donna-Marie's relationship with Mother Teresa. Donna-Marie shares intimate moments of her life with us to show us how God works in all things. She shares intimate moments of her friendship with Mother Teresa so that we can be a part of this friendship by doing everything "with Jesus, for Jesus, and toward Jesus." It is not for the "holiest" of us, it is for all who thirst. Mother Teresa's view of serving Jesus in others one person at a time has helped me realize that I don't have to be called to a third world country to help the poorest of the poor. I need to start with the people in my own home, and go from there, loving one soul at a time. Pages 153-156 are some of my favorites.

I read this book while sitting in a whirlpool for my foot during physical therapy.
Agreeing with Donna-Marie, "there is no such thing as a coincidence." I shared this book with my physical therapist. It was beautiful! God is amazing!

Thank you very much, Machell for your lovely review! I am very happy that this book has inspired you to greater holiness. May God bless you and yours!

Hugs,

Donna-Marie

Women are strong! Women are faithful!

I love what Archbishop Sheen expressed to us, don't you? He asked...

"Which stands up better in a crisis - man or woman? The best way to arrive at a conclusion is to go to the greatest crises the world ever faced, namely the CRUCIFIXION OF OUR DIVINE LORD. When we come to this great drama of Calvary there is one fact that stands out very clearly: Men failed. On the other hand, there is not a single instance of a woman's failing him."

~Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

Can we pray to be as faithful as the women who stood by our dear Lord Jesus? We have to be!

We need to pray for a increase in faith, hope, and love EVERY DAY! Faithful women can be an awesome example to others and help to bring them closer to Our Lord.
