Review: A Catholic Woman's Book of Prayers

Author and blogger Kate Wicker offers her kind words about my book: A Catholic Woman's Book of Prayers...

As a busy and sometimes frazzled mom of littles, I may desire long blocks of time devoted to contemplative prayer, but life as it is right now is messy, noisy, and full of interruptions. Plus, I have the attention span of a housefly, which makes a contemplative prayer an even greater challenge, but I am working on that. (I was up prayer journaling at 5:30 a.m. this morning. Right now that seems like one of the best formats for prayer time for me because it doesn’t set me up for failure so much as just sitting and being still does.)

Most women – mothers or not – are multitasking mavens. We’re on the move. We’re busy. But we’re also hungry for God. A Catholic Woman’s Book of Prayers is one of Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle’s most recent releases, and the diverse collection of prayers for Catholic women offers just the kind of quick, spiritual bites we crave.

I admit I haven’t read the book cover-to-cover or at least not from start to finish (I think I’ve probably covered most of the text by now). Instead, I have tucked the petite book into my purse. It’s the perfect size (it’s smaller than my wallet!) to bring along with me during my daily activities as a wife and mother of little ones. I know it’s there so when I’m blessed with a free moment – maybe I’m stuck in a long line at the grocery store or perhaps my child is busy dribbling a soccer ball during practice – I pull it out and use its wisdom and prayers to help me connect with God.

I’ve also, of course, used the book when I’ve been searching for the right prayer for a particular challenge I might be facing or to cope with an emotion that’s taken a hold of me. Chapter 3, Challenges Women Face, is particularly helpful during these times. I’ve prayed the “Help Me to Find Balance, Lord” on more than one occasion!

The book not only includes traditional as well as original prayers but also brief reflections on sundry topics that speak to a woman’s heart. Inspiration from the saints and other spiritual greats are sprinkled throughout the pages as well.

This book is a wonderful resource for any woman trying to lead a faithful life and desiring a closer union with her Creator.

On my way to EWTN

Recently I traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to go to the EWTN network where I would tape 25 new segments of my show: "Everyday Blessings for Catholic Moms." I'd also be doing an interview with Doug Keck on his Bookmark show and meet with a few people to discuss a few things. I had finished up a book I was writing before my deadline to prepare for the trip and the shows. All in God' timing.

On my way down there I sat next to a young woman on the plane who was busy reading her magazine. I quietly prayed my Rosary upon tale-off and sat quietly saying my prayers as we traveled. Since my neighbor in the seat beside me was occupied with her magazine reading I thought it was best not to disturb her. It would be about a 3 hour flight.

I always pray and ask God to use me for His will and to seat me near whomever He wants me to sit while traveling. About halfway into the flight, the pilot announced that we would land about 50 minutes early.

After the flight, we had our photo taken
Suddenly, the woman beside me turned to me and asked, "Did he say fifteen minutes or fifty?" She couldn't quite believe that it might be fifty. But it was! I confirmed his words and so the ice was broken. We began a conversation.

By the grace of God, somehow we got to talking about Faith! Right now I can't remember how that happened. Sometimes I can never quite remember when I look back at some of the amazing encounters that God blesses me with how I ever got to talking about God with a perfect stranger. But, God knows and that's all that matters really. He sets up the opportunities and I praise Him for it.

So, the young woman and I had an interesting conversation.

And then, I reached into my pocket to retrieve the blessed Miraculous medal I had put in there that morning feeling confident that it may very well find a home around some one's neck (please God!).

I took out the medal and as I started to hand it to the woman, I told her that I wanted to give her something that I felt was very special. I proceeded to tell her that it was blessed and that I had placed it on Pope John Paul II's tomb at the Vatican and also on Blessed Mother Teresa's bed at the convent where she stayed when she was in Rome with the Missionary of Charity Sisters. I then kissed it and touched it to the medal I wear that Mother Teresa had given me. I handed it to her.

She was so happy to receive it. She said something like, "Oh! You have no idea how much this means to me!" She reached around her neck to take off her chain and then proceeded to put the blessed Miraculous medal on her necklace. I was so happy that she would actually wear it because the Blessed Mother had stated to Saint Catherine Laboure whom she appeared to that those who wear the medal will receive many graces.

Specifically, in 1830 after showing St. Catherine Laboure a vision of the image of the medal, Mary said, "Have a medal struck upon this model. All who wear it, when it is blessed, will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck."

As Nancy placed the medal around her neck she began to share an experience that had happened about a month and a half earlier. I sat there listening. On the edge of my seat, inwardly praising Jesus for this encounter and asking dear Mary to intercede, and all the while listening to each word...

Interesting and amazing encounter!

I still have to write about my recent trip to the EWTN network, but God has been keeping me busy.

I just had an amazing encounter I'd love to tell you about. So, let's hope I can do so later today. :)

Amazing Grace at the Post Office!

I just love doing something I don't want to do or don't really have time to do. You think I'm crazy, huh? Well, usually there's a lot of hidden grace in doing the things we'd rather not and when doing them not begrudgingly, but instead even with love.

After dropping my daughter off at work I knew I had to go to the Post Office. At that point, I would really have rather gone straight home because my writing work is mounting. I need to finish some things before I can leave for EWTN in Alabama where I'll tape 25 new segments of my "Everyday Blessings for Catholic Moms" TV show. I just finished the latest book I was writing yesterday and am very happy about that but I have to tie up some loose ends with things and prepare for my trip.

Off I went to the Post Office. It was surprisingly quiet there. I mentioned that to the clerk and she said it's been kind of "eerie" lately at all the Post Offces she substitutes at. Well, I did what I needed to do there and also had a short chat with the woman behind the counter about the recent tornadoes. She was quite disturbed about it. Since I knew this woman had read my latest Catholic prayer book for women, I knew I could talk to her about prayer (I probably would have any way!) I told her that she really needs to pray--we all do--and especially to the Blessed Mother and to plead for the Lord's mercy. I reminded her that we are a nation that allows the killing of unborn babies to the tune of millions and said I wonder how much longer God is going to be silent. I wasn't trying to instill fear, but rather was reiterating something I recently heard from a conversation I had with a very holy priest.

So, first of all - interesting conversation at the Post Office - a government building where I absolutely LOVE to talk about prayer :) and then the inspiration came to me to give the clerk a blessed Miraculous medal. It was after I had said "good bye" and she thanked me and told me that she always feels better after she talks with me. All glory goes to God (I am thankful to be His little instrument).

Out in the lobby I stopped to check my purse to see if I had a medal with me. Sure enough, I did! I went back in and got in line again (funny, I was previously in such a hurry to get back to work) and I presented her the blessed medal and told her how I had placed it on Blessed John Paul II's tomb and Blessed Mother Teresa's bed while I was in Rome recently (last September). She was thrilled and placed it over her heart. I told her to wear it in good health and to pray to our Lady for help with our country and our world.

Then the other clerk called me over and shared with me the title of an inspirational book she just read and how it impacted her. So neat to share these things about our faith in the POST OFFICE (where so many good and holy things have happened in the past). God is so good!

Next, off to see Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament because I felt Him calling me. No, not time to go do your work just now - come see ME first! Those weren't His exact words. Off I went to the church and was able to pray part of a Rosary and ask for protection for a daughter who is flying to Israel today and help for a son going on a job interview (Please pray for them, especially my daughter's trip). And I went through my litany of requests about all those who ask me for prayers, and lots of thanks and praise to Him too.

While I was there I felt deeply inspired to arrange a Holy Hour of Reparation to be held on the first Saturday of each month at 3:00 PM, the hour of great mercy, where we can plead for protection for our country and the world while offering prayers of reparation for the outrageous crimes against human life. I plan to discuss this with my pastor and I encourage you all to try to do the same. Even if you can't arrange a formal Holy Hour, at least just gather a group of friends and go before Jesus and pray or just do it yourself.

We need to be open to God's whispers to our hearts especially when we are rushing around and busy. Take time to search for the silence in which to pray as Mother Teresa has always said.

Even if you can't steal away to the Blessed Sacrament for prayer in which to hear Our Lord, lift your heart straight up to God right where you are and He will be there to embrace it--always!

God bless you!

Donna-Marie

Happy Pentecost Sunday

"And when the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the Holy Spirit prompted them to speak" (Acts 2, 1-4).

Happy Pentecost Sunday everyone! Enjoy the BLESSED day with your families. Drop me a comment to let me know what you're up to today.

God bless!
