My recent chat with Teresa Tomeo on Catholic Connection

I was chatting with Teresa Tomeo this morning on her wonderful show, "Catholic Connection." We discussed a family's Lenten journey and Saint Therese of Lisieux, Mother Teresa, and St. Teresa of Avila. Here's a link so you can listen in case you missed it: http://www.donnacooperoboyle.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/CC_DMCOB_03-18-14.mp3

Blessed Mother Teresa's birthday

Today is the anniversary of Blessed Mother Teresa's birthday. If time allows, I'll write a post about her later on but for now I'll leave you with some very simple yet poignant words with which she instructed me:
"Keep the joy of loving Jesus ever burning in your heart and share this joy with others by your thoughtful love and humble service."
This is something we can all strive to do.
My son Joseph as a baby with Blessed Mother Teresa
Here is a radio segment which was recorded some time ago (Live at that time) in which I spoke with Teresa Tomeo about Blessed Mother Teresa and the interior struggle she experienced which St. John of the Cross had coined as a dark night of the soul. I hope you enjoy it.

I feel DOUBLY blessed!

It is my honor to be published in the L'Osservatore Romano this week AND to be able to spread the word about my dear friend and colleague Teresa Tomeo's All Things Girl series of books for young girls.

A bit of my review was incorporated into the introductory paragraph and the editor added the information about our participation at the Vatican congress in 2008. The piece begins with:

Talk show host with EWTN/Ave Maria Radio, Teresa Tomeo, teamed up with Molly Miller and Monica Cops, who put their heads and hearts together to come up with a breath of fresh air for today's young girls, in the form of a series of books called “All Things Girl”. The following is a review of two of the books in the series by Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle, EWTN TV host and author of several Catholic books. Donna-Marie and Teresa participated in the International Congress for Women held at the Vatican in February 2008.

You can see the review here in the Vatican newspaper.

My Rome pilgrimage

I've been telling you that I would post about my trip here and then I came back from Rome to four birthday celebrations - 3 of my kids' and mine too, as well as Thanksgiving to boot! Needless to say, I was very busy. Now, I will finally fill you in a bit.

Let's start at the beginning...

Teresa Tomeo and I were invited to an evangelization summit held in Rome near the Vatican. We both traveled on November 11th and arrived in Rome by separate flights on November 12th. I didn't sleep a wink on my flight because I was surrounded with very loud people who didn't think a night flight was for sleeping. In addition, I can never really get any sleep in a tight little spot anyway. Nevertheless, I was very excited that I would be meeting up with my dear friend Teresa at the airport. We found one another and our gracious driver, Alfredo, who then kindly took us to the apartment where we would be staying.

Here are the two of us - Lucy and Ethel as we are sometimes referred to. Don't look too close at me - this is after no sleep the night before on the plane and I mean zero sleep and then the journey to the apartment.

We were so glad to have the opportunity to be together and experience the upcoming summit together too. Is God good, or what? We felt incredibly blessed and thanked God right there on the spot. Alfredo did the honors of snapping the photo.

This is what we were greeted with when we walked into the very cute living room and dining room of our apartment - goodies for us, lovingly placed there by some sweet person. Cookies, flowers, fruit, wine - how wonderful! Rome, ahh, Rome sweet Rome! What a great start to an amazing trip!

Speaking of cookies...yep - they were delicious! Oh, that's right! Italian candies too!

After we took showers to try and wash away some of the sleepiness with hopes of getting some sort of second-wind, Teresa and I stepped out on the town! We looked all over and relished in the sheer beauty that we see in Rome. Oh, I must pause here and back up a bit to mention that when we got out of the car at our apartment when we first arrived, Teresa looked up at the blue sky and exclaimed out loud with her arms outstretched to the sky, something like, "The sky is even so much prettier in ROME!!!" And as soon as the words were out of her mouth, a voice coming from an apartment window above exclaimed, "Stai zitti!!!" That means, "Shut up!!" We laughed. "We're here!" we mused. "Watch out Rome!!"

First we walked up to a nearby church called St. Cecelia's As I posted a little earlier on this blog on the feast of St. Cecelia, "It was a very beautiful church and we spent some time there. I was most struck by a man who was pushing a broom, cleaning up the courtyard just outside the door. We stopped to talk with him and ask a few questions about St. Cecilia. I had remembered that I had read something about her recently and I wanted a find out more. The man stood there, leaning on his broom - his eyes gleaming as he told us the story he knew. We felt blessed to hear from this seemingly simple man who appeared to us to have a deep faith. The photo here is one I took of the altar in St. Cecilia's church. Her relics are below the altar." I couldn't wait to get to St. Peter's. That wouldn't be soon enough for me.

We came upon a neat little place that Teresa recognized from a previous trip, went in and enjoyed a glass of wine together.

Ah, dear friends together! What another glass of wine at another quaint little place? Well, we were just sipping, and lots of time had passed as we walked around, partly in a sleep deprived daze (at least I was) and partly just in awe of where we were, and we took it all in, thanking God all along the way.

We finally met up with our dear dear friend, Joan Lewis who is EWTN's News Bureau Chief for the Vatican. We sat down at a favorite restaurant and relished in one another's company. Yes, of course, we had to sip at another glass of that fine Italian wine and eat that scrumptious food cooked to perfection, mingled with amazing conversation and topped off with Limoncello. We remarked that if cameras were rolling or recording equipment, we could have had about 5 episodes worth of material based on the many wonderful things we shared about our faith and the Church!

Now, there's something funny about locks, keys and Lucy and me! It all started last year, almost 2 years ago, really in Rome. We seemed to have some trouble and that's why we nick-named ourselves Lucy and Ethel. Here's Teresa AKA Lucy attempting to turn the key in the lock to the outside door of our apartment for about the twentieth time. I was laughing so hard that I could hardly pull out my camera to document it! But, document, I did! I'm still recalling Alfredo's words of direction to us about the keys when we arrived - "this one turn this way and that one turn four times this way" - they are a bit tricky.

Up the stairs and another key for our inside door. We finally get in and can't wait to flop on beds that looked oh, so inviting after no sleep for what seemed like forever. But who cared? We were in Rome.

But, before bed, we had to get our clothes spiffy for our conference which we would be going to very bright and early in the morning. Don't you love the cute little kitchen?

We looked forward to having sweet dreams, thankful for our safe arrival, a wonderful time together and with dear Joan and all that was in store for us at the summit the following day with the great line up of speakers and people that we looked forward to meeting.

To be continued...

I will find time to upload my photos from my Rome trip and give you snippets each day as I also catch up at home and prepare for Thanksgiving and many birthday celebrations in my family.

God bless your Saturday!

Back-To-School Week

We are nearing that dreaded or perhaps welcomed time of year- BACK-TO-SCHOOL! Some children have already begun classes and some are about to enter into their homeschooling routines or are getting back on that big yellow school bus and will begin anew: backpacks filled with brand new crayons and freshly sharpened pencils while possibly a few butterflies dance around in their stomachs. Our older "kids" are embarking into that whole new world of college or may be returning for another year there. Lots of preparations going on for parents and children alike!

I am running a week of posts, fun, information, and also a contest this week to help get us ready for back-to-school. I say "help us get ready" because this week may be more about the parents than the kids! We'll see how it unfolds. As I stated in an earlier post, I will enter every one's name who comments here this week or who is a contributor of a guest post into a drawing to win a copy of my new book: Mother Teresa and Me: Ten Years of Friendship which will be released in September some time and another winner will receive a beautiful Rosary that can be given to your college bound "child" or used yourself for the many Rosaries you will be praying for him or her (or for more than one child in college at a time as in my case).

On Wednesday, I'll be posting a new radio segment in which Teresa Tomeo and I will be chatting about back-to-school. Please feel to visit and comment on my posts this week. Please also feel free to spread the word to you friends and please link and share.

First off, let's remember that we can still have a great influence on our college-bound "kids" even from afar. That's when we are praying like St. Monica unceasingly for them. We can even fast and pray for them being mindful that they are being exposed to many other kinds of teaching that will be contradictory to the way we have raised them. This is when we hope and pray and really have to trust that the foundation we built for them based on prayer and the tenets of our faith will be strong in their hearts.

For the younger ones, we have to make it our business to know what's being taught to them at school. We are of course their first and fore most educator according to our holy Mother Church. Even Catholic schools may and do unfortunately teach erroneous things. We must be aware, vigilant, and proactive in our children's education. I'll have a guest post from a Mom whose blog is all about purity or lack thereof in the Catholic classroom.

I will be featuring some excellent guest posts here this week pertaining to kids off to school, home-schooling, college, and much more. Be watching for a college survival guide this week - for the parents, not the "kids!" Also, be watching for my article about back to school coming up in September's Canticle magazine.

I'll be back later today to post some more. In the meantime, please pass the word about our week here and feel free to chime in with a comment about what you're going through right now or maybe your own back-to-school traditions.

Talk to you later!

hugs,

Donna-Marie

Back-to-school, this and that, mostly that..

I'll be running a "Back-to-School" week next week here at View From the Domestic Church. I'll also be posting details very soon so that you can tune into a "Mom's Corner" segment with Teresa Tomeo and me coming up next Wednesday where we will talk about "back-to-school" - that dreaded phrase to some kid's ears. However, we know that some kids actually love to go back to school to see their friends and partake in interesting things while others like to get back into a routine of home-schooling with their parents.

Teresa and I will be chatting on all sorts of school things including the spiritual. I hope you can tune in to hear about back to college and back to school, as well as some home-schooling stuff too.

I'll be putting up a "College Survival Guide" here at View From the Domestic Church and I don't mean for the students - I am referring to the parents! We are the ones that may need the survival tips. :) I will welcome your input as usual and I hope that you will leave comments about your experiences, traditions, and strategies. It's great when we can all come together and share. So, be looking for that information coming up soon.

Oh, and before I forget to mention this, all of the comments that will come in to the survival guide post and actually any post next week during my "Back-to-School" themed week will be entered into a drawing to win a beautiful Rosary that can be given to your college-bound student or kept for yourself for the many Rosaries you'll be saying for your son or daughter. :) I will feature some wonderful guest bloggers here next week to share some of their own insights or traditions too. I just may be having some other goodies to give away here as well. So, stay tuned!

Talk to you soon!

hugs and blessings,

Donna-Marie

Modern and Modest Girls Rock!

My review of Modern and Modest and Girls Rock!

Author and syndicated Catholic talk show host, Teresa Tomeo, teamed up with Molly Miller, and Monica Cops, putting their heads and hearts together to come up with a breath of fresh air for today’s young girls.

Their series, All Things Girl , published by Bezalel Books includes 6 titles, two of which are: Girls Rock ! and Modern and Modest . The series speaks about the dignity at the heart of every girl created in the image and likeness of God and does it in a very fun and appealing way. The books are generous in size and filled with colorful and attractive designs to capture a young girl’s attention.

Modern and Modest is a delightful and eye-catching 59 pages and is just the book we’d love to see in every young girl’s hands. The authors cover every relevant subject for girls from being a Godly girl and turning away from the media’s portrayal of the culture’s expectations and enticements and turning toward Jesus and the Church instead, to fashion and fabrics and what modesty really means, how to be modern and modest at the same time, as well as an overview of virtues and how they apply to living as a girl in our world today. Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body and Feminine Genius teachings are woven through in an uncomplicated understandable way. All topics discussed in Modern and Modest illustrate to girls that they can be very modern and cool yet pleasing to God in their modesty which is consistently explained in a simple yet contemporary manner.

In addition to suggesting ways to come up with a “family media plan” regarding the computer use, TV and movie viewing, this book encourages girls to look up to parents in topics such as “Daddy’s Little Girl” and “Look to Mom.” Amusing personality quizzes are sprinkled throughout the book. As well, make up and fragrance discussions, goals to achieve, and prayers to be included in a plan for life are all blended together in a delightful mix which is just right for our young growing girls. A story about St. Maria Goretti ends the book on a note to enhance the book’s message of purity and dignity. (Continued here at Catholic Exchange today.) If you feel inclined, please leave a comment over at Catholic Exchange.
